Listen to Khutba

  • Prophet ﷺ said, “Allah looks down to his creation on the night of the 15th of Sha’ban and forgives the believers, gives respite to the disbelievers, and leaves the people of wickedness to their wickedness until they give it up.” (Tabarani, Bayhaqi; hasan)
  • Prophet ﷺ said, “Allah looks down on the night of the 15th of Sha’baan and forgives all his creation except a mushrik or one who harbors hatred against the Muslims.” (Ibn Majah, Ibn Hibban; hasan)

“(Allah) looks down to His creation” has one of two interpretations:

    1. Allah looks down to His creation with a merciful look
    2. Allah “descends to the lowest heaven in the night of the 15th of Sha’ban

“…He then forgives the believers”: Allah forgives all Muslims except the one who has hatred in his heart towards another Muslim, who has enmity against a righteous Muslim without a sound reason

“…gives respite to disbelievers”: Allah gives a short break to the disbelievers without forgiving them and does not forgive the wicked until they give up their wickedness

  • No specific worship on the day or night of the 15th of Sha’ban
  • Required to do two things to gain forgiveness of the night of the 15th of Sha’ban:
    • Avoid acts of shirk in all its forms
    • Don’t spread enmity and resolve disputes with other Muslims
  • Definition of shirk: ascribing a partner or rival to Allah in Lordship (ruboobiyyah), worship, or in His names and attributes
  • Severity of shirk:
    • Shirk is “a tremendous wrong” (Quran 31:13)
    • Allah will not forgive the sin of shirk unless person repents from it (Quran 4:48)
    • Allah has forbidden Paradise to a person who commits shirk (Quran 5:72)
    • All good works a person may have done are lost and become worthless (Quran 39:65)
    • Shirk is the deadliest of all major sins (Muslim)
  • “Reconciliation is best” (Quran 4:128) and “mend what is between you” (Quran 8:1)
  • Prophet ﷺ said, “It is not permissible for a Muslim to shun his brother for over three nights, (when) they meet, this one turns away and that one turns away and the best of them is the one who greets his brother first.” (Bukhari, Muslim)
  • Prophet ﷺ said, “Who shuns his brother for a year it is as if his blood was shed.” (Musnad, Abu Dawud, Hakim)
  • Prophet ﷺ emphasized that reconciliation between people is “higher in status than fasting, performing prayers, and giving charity” and “enmity between the people is the razor,” that “does not shave the head, but shaves the religion” (Musnad, Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi)
  • Abu Dujana had a bright face when he got terminally ill. When asked why his face was shining, he said, “I have not done an action more rooted and firm than two: I do not speak in what does not concern me and I have a pure heart towards the Muslims.”

May Allah protect us from shirk.

May Allah purify our hearts and mend the broken relations between Muslim brothers and sisters.
